Speak politely to your mother

Set a good example.  Your kids need to respect their mother and you need to both set the example and have the expectation that this is so.
Presenting a united front with your kids' mom is very important and one of the best ways to do this is to ensure a respectful attitude is always expected toward her.  Stick up for her, she’s your bride.  You want the same for your kids later in life too.  Show them what it means to be loyal to your spouse, so that they will pass on the favor later.

Might I add that this is true for you if your kids mom doesn't live with you?  Far better to pass on that attitude than a bitter sarcastic one.

I was brought up to respect my mother and grandparents(father died when I was three)
As a mother myself I passed this down to my three children,
The eldest however has decided he no longer wants me as a mother and haven't spoken in a year despite my phone calls.....he has now changed his number, and emails.
You can guide them to certain values in life but once they are an adult they have minds of their own.

Have a good week-end.

I'm a firm believer in the saying, "The best thing a man can do for his children is to love their mother."

My mother was and is a strong independent personality and indirectly raised her girls to be. From my observation children mimic what they see not so much what they hear.

When she came face to face with her same personality traits through her children it was as if she didn't know where they were coming from. She didn't particularly appreciate our independence as far as being outspoken and expressing what we felt.

I never considered myself disrespecting my mom- however to express myself to her was disrespect from her point of view.

So even today - I pretty much have to relate to her on her terms - and I've learned to except that; took me a while; I one day realized that she took care of me for 18 years so, I have learned to live with her terms.

In fact I wish I could have simple had that as my focus early on!

Hear! Hear! on this post. So many polities have left our culture, and this is one of the basics. Thank you for reinforcing it!

If you've the chance, stop by my blog. I'm the author of the Bella and Britt series for kids.

Thanks again for your post!

Hi Ron .. I wish more parents were cohesive and supportive together .. and realised each other's worth - then as you say it would be absorbed by the children ..

Cheers Hilary
